Highlights and Takeaways from TCEC's First FER/BER Review Service

This year, TCEC launched something new: a review service to support your FERs and BERs before you submit them. We were excited to see how many projects took us up on this offer and to learn how the service helps ease some of the challenges of writing reports.

First-Time Service

In just a couple of months, 37 reports came in for review. Each draft report received preliminary scores along with tailored feedback to help make the reports stronger.  We had a good mix of experienced and first-time authors request this service, so we hope that no matter your level of expertise, you know that our team is here to help.  We really enjoyed being able to connect with so many of you and get an insider look at all the amazing work from around the state.  It was also great to see so many people that joined our monthly Q/A sessions as well as receiving personalized reviews of their reports.

Tips to Use Review Service Wisely

  • Start early. No need to wait until your report is finished. We can review sections like the background or methods whenever you’re ready.
  • Choose your formats. Feedback can come as written notes, a virtual meeting, or both of whether works best for you.
  • Keep it going. This isn’t a one-time service. You can resubmit sections after revisions, and we’ll continue to provide guidance.

Learning from Your Voice

Thank you to everyone who shared feedback through our review service post-survey. Your input is helping shape the way we continue this service. One key takeaway was the need for clearer guidance around the review process. Clear communication is really important, and we’re already working on improvements and expanding our services. Consistent, On-Demand Support

We know every project runs on a different schedule. If your deadline’s coming up and you’d like a second set of eyes on your report, just reach out to TCEC! We’ll give you feedback before you submit. The service is totally on demand, and we’ll work with your timeline. We’re excited to keep offering FER/BER review service.

Updated FER Scoring Process

We have one last important change about FERs submitted June 2025 and after: TCEC is no longer automatically scoring FERs. Instead, scoring is now available by request only. 

To request feedback on FERs submitted June 2025 and after, just email us at tcecTA@phmail.ucdavis.edu and we will work with CTPP to provide feedback and scores.  We know these are big changes from the way things were done in the past.  Our aim is to provide more actionable help that your teams can use, and TCEC’s new evaluation report services is just the beginning!

Looking Ahead

Launching this service was an important first step in building better reports together, and your participation made it a success. We’re excited to keep refining the process, making it clearer, more flexible, and even more useful for your work. Remember, you’re not alone in writing evaluation reports! Don’t stress over whether your report is on the right track. We’re here to support you every step of the way and to help you strengthen your evaluation writing!
